Lake Chapala Through the Ages an Anthology of Travellers' Tales eBook Tony Burton Rosemary Chan

This is a delightful little book that will be a perfect read for someone visiting the Lake Chapala area of Mexico. The travellers' tales date between 1530 and 1910, so don't expect recent history or comment on the present condition of the area as a home to thousands of U.S. and Canadian ex-pats and retirees. Do expect some interesting insights and wonderful descriptions of the area. Burton has done a great job of adding introductions and explanatory comments on the entries. I lived on Lake chapala in the mid-1960s during the time that I was carrying out an archaeological project for my doctoral dissertation. I have carried the beauty of the place in my heart for 40 years. I recommend this little book.

Lake Chapala Through the Ages an Anthology of Travellers' Tales eBook Tony Burton Rosemary Chan Reviews

What a fine effort for those struggling to put Lake Chapala into some kind of perspective. It's a fascinating place for those who see it, and a popular destination for American retirees looking for a grand place to park. What this book does so well is to sort through history to put the current spot into some sort of context for the visitor. The author/editor clips bits and pieces from the first observations in print, and even provides some context for understanding the area's role in the history of a struggling nation. It's a thorough collection of bits in print providing nice perspective from indian chiefs and friars to rebellious pursuers of national independence and entrepreneurs aiming (and often failing) with versions of 'development'. Charming book for those interested in the area.
Any Mexico traveler who enjoys keeping a journal will enjoy this anthology. Tony Burton has put together an impressive collection of writings by travelers who have visited the Lake Chapala region of northwestern Mexico since the times of the Conquistadors and roving friars to travel promoters and amateur scientists of the early 1900s. This kind of anthology is a great way to get a sense of changing times and changing ecology of a particular place or region, in this case, the Lake Chapala region of Jalisco, Mexico. Intermingled with the first-hand accounts of the area in different eras, Mr. Burton provides snippets of background history to give some larger context and enhance the reader's overall understanding of this particular region and Mexico in general. This book is a great way for the general reader to get some Mexico history, but there is also a bibliography and an index for the more serious aficionados of Mexico history. Burton is a consummate scholar whose writing is also enjoyable to read.

Mexico is a wild, sprawling, confusing country, her history and geographical makeup match that description. Looking at most other countries one roughly sees an outline from point A to Z. United States history moves east to west. Mexico is different, matching her nature. Mexican history mimics a wild tide rushing in from the east, but also sprawling north and south. That tide retreats leaving spots of settlement, and then repeats the process dozens of times. How does one explain such a history or discern if these tides have settled? Lake Chapala through the ages could have been a wild, sprawling book to match her nation’s history, but it’s not. Author Tony Burton achieved a great amount of order in this 500 year review
I’ve wondered how do you really tell Mexican history, where events don’t always follow sequentially, if they relate at all? Burton took a clever path by tackling one small region and allowing historical travelers to tell the story chronologically. He just presented what various travelers reported when they visited from 1530 through 1910.
Despite Americans and Canadians living in the Lake Chapala-Guadalajara region few north of the boarder are familiar with the 75 by 25 kilometer lake. Literary people are the exception due to D. H. Lawrence and other noted artists and writers who experienced the lake for various periods. Lawrence is associated with the quality of light at Lake Chapala. The setting is so spectacular; travelers during primitive times predicted the area becoming a tourist destination and settlement for vacation type homes.
Retirement communities are Chapala topics today but beyond Spanish exploration Lake Chapala through the ages reminds us of what was important not many years ago. Observers from the 1500s through the 1800s took careful note of the number of cattle and sheep, what trees grew in which village, what crops were planted, what other wildlife flourished, what fish were caught and sold. Details we never think about today, but which remain as pertinent to our wellbeing as they were to our forefathers.
Mexico remains a wild, sprawling country but Tony Burton’s amazing research and superb editing brings order to Lake Chapala. He included excerpts from more than fifty books, spanning nearly 500 years. The reader is rewarded with accounts ranging from a dreadful and heroic Indian revolt to the development of early hotels. Readers additionally discover what Americans and Europeans encountered traveling to and around the lake in far more difficult times.
I like the "bottom up" nature of the book versus "top down" historical conclusions. A " must read" for the Lakeshore folks.
very interesting historical perspective of the lake chapala area - I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to expats living in the area
