Written in 1902, this tale has our young hero inheriting a million dollars from his Grandfather. He then finds that he's also inheriting 7 million dollars from his Uncle if he gets rid of every penny that he received from his Grandfather. Why? Because his Uncle hated the Grandfather and doesn't want even a penny of his to mingle with the old man's money. He gives Brewster one year to dispose of the money. This is tricky because his friends keep trying to save him money and there are further conditions, including maintaining his silence, that complicate things. Excellent story and more logical than the movie.The only major defect is the use of derogatory terms for Italians, Arabs, and other non Americans which was unfortunately common at the turn of the century. If you can ignore this, then the rest of the book is great fun.

This is an old classic that I read many years ago. There have been at least two different versions of this story done as Hollywood movies. I have not viewed any of the movies but after reviewing the story line on them, I believe they did not do justice to the novel since they changed the protagonist’s role in the movie. The novel was excellent in my opinion although it might confuse the younger reader when the much smaller sums of money are spent on luxury items. Below is a conversion that might help understand this. This conversion was done with the aid of a Goggle search.

This book is easy to read and the frustration Brewer had in trying to spend one million dollars within a one year period in 1902 is rather humorous when he finds his deliberate bad investments make him money. I wish I had that problem!
I thoroughly enjoyed this light-hearted, yet suspenseful story of a millionaire who has a quest to loose every cent he owns by his next birthday in order to gain millions and millions more. He has a devil of a time trying to spend lavishly on all of his friends, risking big bets in hopes of loosing his money, only to gain more! On top of that, his friends try to help him keep his money and not throw it all away. He has several guidelines that he has to follow and he can tell no one of this quest. At first his friends enjoy all this lavishness, until the discover that he is practically throwing all of his money away. Apparently, these upper-crust folks look at a man and his worth only by how much money he has. The more he has, the more popular he becomes. Money is the end-all to everything. I have read a few other books about this type of society (Jane Austin's novels, for example) and the folks all have this same type of mentality. Even though this story was written over 100 years ago, it's still a great read today.
I watched the 1985 movie with Richard Pryor so I thought reading the book would be a treat. But it turns out it was not. The general idea of spending 1 million dollars to get 7 million in a year's time is good but the way it's spent makes for a boring book. Time has been hard on this book, I can see how 100 years ago it might have been a fun book to read but it's a boring book in 2018. It turns out that even as a free book it's too expensive. You can't get your time back.
I hope someone has the imagination to re-write it in the future but for now, you're better off by just watching the 1985 movie.

I remember seeing the Movie Brewster's Million's starring Richard Pryor in the late 1980s. Lately I have been wanting to see it again and the search for the movie led to me discovering that it was based upon this book. It also led me to discover that there have been several movies based upon this book. The first one released in 1914.
As with most Book v. Movie comparisons, the book is much better than the movie. It is also very different. As I remember in the movie Mr. Brewster inherits $30 Million from an unknown Grandfather and must spend it in a month with nothing to show for it so that he can then inherit $300 million from the same Grandfather. In the book Monty Brewster inherits $1 million from his paternal Grandfather that he knows very well since his Grandfather raised him after his parents died when he was a young boy. This inheritance happens to fall upon his birthday. A few days later, however, he learns that a barely remembered Uncle on his mother's side has left him $7 million with the provision in the Will that he must be penniless upon his next birthday. It seems that the paternal grandfather looked down on Monty's mother's family and the Uncle does not want any of his money mingled with the Brewster money. Monty, however, may not tell anyone about the will and its stipulations nor may he just give the money away with the exception of sparing gifts to charity. In addition, he must get his money's worth from all of his spending so that he can prove that he is able to handle large sums of money. Satisfying the provisions of the will is found to be more difficult than you might think. Especially since the book was written in 1902 when $1 million was a much larger fortune than it is today.
The writing style in the book reminded me of some of Mark Twain's short stories and I was interested to find out that the author listed Mark Twain as one of his influences. The book was funny in places and touching in places and Monty finds out who his real friends are. All in all a really good read
